You can also put your finger, or even your hand at risk by putting them in form of a pesky, aggressive catch.
With a fish lip gripper, you have total control over a fish, and can handle the fish with no trouble. A gripper clamps around the lip of a fish so that it cannot bite or resist.

Best Fish Lip Gripper Reviews
1. Z ZANMAX Fishing Pliers Fish Grip Tools Set
This first fish lip grabber from Z Zanmax is part of a kit. You get a pair of fish pliers in addition to the lip gripper.
This fish lip grabber makes gripping and measuring fish easy. No matter if you are holding a bass or a catfish, you can easily measure the fish as you hold it in position. It also comes with a roll of measuring tape that can go up to 39 inches in length.
The tongs are anti-corrosive, thanks to its stainless steel nature. The handle is also comfortable to hold and is made of skidproof EVA.
Another nifty feature is that it can measure the fish’s weight. Pick the fish up with the gripper and redder to the steel rod to measure up to 40 pounds. This makes it a great tool to help you not just control a fish, but get its statistics right away.
As for the pliers, they are like a utility tool. These pliers can act as scissors, hook removers and ring openers. So no matter what job you need to do on a moment’s notice, these pliers can certainly do the trick.
We aren’t sure if it was just our set, but these fish lip grippers had a hard time locking. When fish squirm around, it isn’t hard for them to pry themselves loose. It’s kind of like the product solely trusts the fish to cooperate as it’s being taken away from its habitat.
2. Piscifun Portable Fish Lip Grabber Gripper
Piscifun’s fish lip grabber does not have a measuring tape for scale. There are other versions from Piscifun that do, but outs does not. It is rather a small and lightweight gripper that solely focuses on grabbing a fish by its mouth and never letting go.
This fish lip gripper has a stainless steel body that is safe to use for both fresh and saltwater. It is resistant to rust and corrosion.
Its handle is both soft and comfortable. It is a non-slip EVA handle so it never manages to fall right out of your fingers. For good measure, there is also a wrist strap so that if it even does fall out of your hands, or you need to drop the gripper instantly, it will just dangle beneath your wrist or arm.
This fish lip gripper does come with its own carrying case, you have something to protect it inside of during storage.
If you are looking for just a fish lip gripper, this is exactly what this is. Most other lip grippers come with something extra to improve the experience of the angler. Without a nifty feature, this is just an ordinary gripper, and we were expecting something more.
3. RUNCL Fishing Pliers Long Nose G1 with Floating Fish Gripper
This is not necessarily a typical lip gripper, but they are pliers, similar to the needle-nose variety. These pliers can do one of five different things: Grip fish, remove hooks, cut lines, split rings and crimp weights. This is rather a tool for helping you make lures and bait.
These pliers are very comfortable to hold, with an ergonomic design and EVA materials that make them very hard to slip out of your hand.
These Runcl pliers include a portable pounch. The pliers can only be inserted in the pouch when they are closed, and they cannot open as long as they are inside. Consider this is nice safety perk included with the fish pliers.
The lanyard connects to the pliers, which can also connect to a belt loop, so you can have the pliers on your person and keep your hands free.
While these can definitely grip the lips of a fish, you will want something more secure. There are other specialty fish lip grippers that can pinch a fish’s lips and control it much better.
4. Entsport Fish Lip Gripper
This Entsport fish lip gripper is next up. It includes a scale, and while some also come with a roll of measuring tape, this one does not. It also has a wrist strap so that it dangles below your wrist if you drop it, on accident or purpose.
The body of this fish lip gripper is stainless steel. It can clamp a fish with the most professional of care.
The scale that this gripper has a maximum weight limit of 40 pounds. It also has readouts in metric units, and the max is 18 kilograms.
The handle is comfortable to hold, and is made of EVA rubber, which makes it hard to slip out of your fingers.
The one problem we had with this fish lip gripper is that the scale is very hard to read. They did not indent the marking deep enough, as if a tattoo artist market it lightly with the most silver of inks. We’d like to have it easier to read so that it does not strain our eyes by looking at it.
5. Rapala Floating Fish Gripper 9 inch
If you are a fisherman and don’t know the name Rapala, you have to be living underneath a rock. With that said, their fish lip gripper looks like a toy gun rather than a tool, but it is as equally as effective without a doubt. This gripper is nine inches long, but there is also another one that is six inches long.
This fish lip gripper is made of heavy duty plastic, like stainless steel, it is corrosion resistant, and the plastic is smoother, making it less likely to harm yourself or the fish.
The gripper, however is guaranteed to make landing your catch faster than with another fish lip gripper. Included with the gripper is a wrist strap that is connected to the tail of the gripper.
This is not a great fish lip gripper to use for small fish. The grippers are just too bulky for a smaller fish’s lips. As mentioned before, there is a smaller version, so if you are looking to only catch small fish, then consider the smaller version. We were kind of surprised with this product from Rapala, to be honest.
6. United Plastics Fish Grip
This last fish lip gripper comes in one of two colors: Orange, and white. The white one can glow in the dark. Made by United plastics, this is an all plastic fish lip gripper with an attached wrist strap.
While this gripper does not come with a built-in scale, there is a slot for you to attach weight scales. There is one thing to keep in mind though, and that is to deduct five ounces to every weigh-in with this gripper, otherwise, the weight you get will include that of the plastic tool.
The unique jaw design of the fish lip gripper from United Plastics can easily grab a fish by its lips and pull it into your control with ease. The weight limit of this fish lip gripper is 50 pounds. You likely won’t catch a fish that heavy, but that goes to show what it is capable of.
The plastic makes it non-corrosive or prone to rusting, like metal can. With this in mind, this is a serviceable gripper that can last a decent amount of time.
The wrist strap also makes the gripper easy to handle, so that it can be with you at all times and you will never lose or misplace it. It can dangle on your wrist so you can still possess it while you reel in your elusive catches.
Like Rapala’s fish lip gripper, this is not ideal for small fish in mind. The plastic, large jaws that this gripper has are best suited for larger fish. If you try to grip a smaller fish, it might hurt the fish, so be careful.

Some Important FAQ About Fish Lip Gripper
What Are The Styles Of The Fish Lip Grippers?
There are three primary styles to fish lip grippers: Traditional, Pistol, and Floating Plastic.
The traditional style is made of aluminum or stainless steel. They have a handle shaped like the letter T. These grippers have a set of claw-like tongs that clamp around the lip of the fish in a secure manner.
The pistol design resembles a pistol or a handgun. Pistol grippers have a trigger similar to a gun that opens and shuts a pair of jaws at the muzzle. These grippers are said to provide the most comfort to anglers, with their ergonomic design, while reducing fatigue and promoting hand strength. None of the fish lip grippers in this review, however, are of this kind.
Floating Plastic Grippers
Floating plastic grippers are fish-handling devices that float on the surface of the water. These are made of plastic claws, and grabbing the fish by its lip should be easy with this gripper.
The fish lip gripper that we most recommend to you is the Z ZANMAX Fishing Pliers Fish Grip Tools Set.
This gripper comes with all the features that every fisherman would love to have: built-in measuring tape and a portable scale, so that you can easily weight and measure your catch as you take it out of the water.
The other great things about this gripper is that it comes with a pair of handy pliers that can open rings and remove hooks. If you are throwing the fish back, then these pliers are what you need to remove the fish of its pain.
